What to do in your garden this month

April

Here's what you should be doing this month.

The spring flowering bulbs can be deadheaded now, however, leave the foliage as the plant will need to produce and store energy for next spring. Although the days are getting longer and there is some warmth, the temperature can still drop at night so be mindful of tender plants which might need some protection. Even if they may be looking a little tatty, do not tidy up the hydrangeas yet as last year’s flowers provide some protection to the new buds.

Hardy annual seeds (sweet peas, sunflowers, poppies) can be sown under cover now for potting on once the seedlings have appeared.  Summer-flowering bulbs (Alstroemeria, Lilies, Dahlia, and Alliums) and tubers can be planted later this month.

You could also consider splitting and spacing out the perennials in your beds to prevent congestion. It is also a good time to feed your established shrubs and roses in your borders.

The lawn can be cut more regularly now and could be given a spring feed to encourage more growth.  The moss can also be looked at, and a moss killer & feed applied, although I would not re-seed the lawn until it gets warmer.  Consideration could be given to scarifying and aerating the lawn, assisting air and nutrients to reach the grass roots.
